1990
  • January 24 - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers perform "A Face In The Crowd" on David Letterman's Anniversary Show. This was Chinner's first show as Mike Campbell's guitar tech!
  • February 21 - Tom receives his first Grammy as a member of the Traveling Wilburys. "Traveling Wilburys, Volume One", won in the category: "Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal".
  • March 1 - Tom Petty is joined by Bob Dylan to perform "Rainy Day Women 12 & 35" and "Everybody's Movin'". Bruce Springsteen then joins Tom & Bob for versions of Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Travelin' Band" and The Animal's "I'm Crying". The show took place at The Great Western Forum in Inglewood, CA.
  • March 13 - Full Moon Fever is certified triple platinum. This is Tom's first album to sell more than 3 million copies.
  • October - Traveling Wilburys, Volume 3 is released, dedicated to the late Roy Orbison.
  • Full Moon Fever is #22 on Billboard's Top Albums of 1990.

1991
  • February - TP sings "Give Peace A Chance" as part of The Peace Choir to protest the Gulf War.
  • July 2 - Into The Great Wide Open released. Produced by Tom Petty, Mike Campbell and Jeff Lynne. #71 Top Albums of 1991. Spent 41 weeks on the Billboard 200.
  • July 27 - Into The Great Wide Open hit peak position of #13 on the Billboard 200.
  • August 8 - Tom Petty on cover of Rolling Stone.
  • August 29 - Opening night of "The Great Wide Open" tour in Denver, CO.
  • September 6 - Into The Great Wide Open certified Gold.
  • October 12 - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers perform "Into The Great Wide Open" and "Kings Highway".
  • October 16 - Into The Great Wide Open certified Platinum.

1992
  • March 4 - European leg of "The Great Wide Open" tour began in Oslo, Norway.
  • April - Tom Petty signs three year deal with Warner Bros. Records.
  • April 6 - Mike Campbell plays a benefit concert with George Harrison at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
  • May 1 - Inspired by the Los Angeles riots, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers record and release "Peace In L.A."
  • October 16 - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers perform three songs at Bob Dylan's 30th Anniversary Concert at Madison Square Garden in NY. The band performed "License To Kill", "Rainy Day Women 12 & 35" and "Mr. Tambourine Man" with Roger McGuinn. Tom later joined the all-star performance of "My Back Pages".
  • November - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers contribute to the charity album, A Very Special Christmas 2, with "Christmas All Over Again".
  • December 9 - Tom Petty presented George Harrison with Billboard's first Century Award in L.A.

1993
  • June - Tom Petty plays a charity gig, as a favor to Johnny Depp, at the opening of the Viper Room in L.A.
  • November 2 & 4 - The only two Heartbreakers concerts of '93 were billed as "The Homecoming Concerts". November 2nd in St. Petersburgh, FL. (I went to that show!) and November 4th in their hometown of Gainesville, FL. Howie Epstein's girlfriend, Carlene Carter, opened both shows. The Gainesville show aired on Westwood One Radio.
  • November 16 - Greatest Hits is released with two new songs; "Mary Jane's Last Dance" and cover of Thunderclap Newman's "Something In The Air". Spent 155 weeks on the Billboard 200 chart.
  • December - "Tom Petty: Going Home" aired on the Disney Channel.

1994
  • January 24 - Greatest Hits certified Gold AND Platinum.
  • February 5 - Greatest Hits reaches it's peak position of #5 on the Billboard 200 chart.
  • March 8 - Greatest Hits certified Double Platinum.
  • August 30 - Tom Petty tribute album, You Got Lucky, is released.
  • September 8 - Tom Petty received MTV's "Video Vanguard Award". TP wins "Best Male Video" award for "Mary Jane's Last Dance". Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers perform a rocking version of "Mary Jane's Last Dance" live.
  • September 9 - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers play "You Don't Know How It Feels" on the Late Show with David Letterman.
  • October 1 & 2 - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers perform at the 8th Annual Bridge School Benefit concerts in Mountain View, CA. The show on the 2nd was Stan Lynch's last show with the band.
  • October 11 - Greatest Hits certified Triple Platinum.
  • October 20 - Official Announcement that Stan Lynch had left the band.
  • November - Tom Petty is VH1's Artist Of The Month.
  • November 1 - Tom Petty's second solo album, Wildflowers, is released with 'Breakers on board. Spent 53 weeks on the Billboard 200 chart. Produced by Tom Petty, Mike Campbell and Rick Rubin.
  • November 15 - Tom Petty "chats" with fans on Prodigy Online.
  • November 19 - Wildflowers hit peak position of #8 on the Billboard 200 chart. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers play "You Don't Know How It Feels" on Saturday Night Live with Dave Grohl playing drums.
  • November 21 - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers perform "You Wreck Me" on the Late Show with David Letterman. Steve Ferrone played drums.

1995
  • January 11 - Wildflowers certified Gold, Platinum AND Double Platinum

  • February 18 - The Heartbreakers' first producer, Denny Cordell, dies of Lymphoma near his home in Dublin, Ireland. He was credited with discovering Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, T-Rex, Joe Cocker, and the Cranberries.
  • February 28 - "Dogs With Wings" tour starts in Louisville, KY.
  • April 28 - Greatest Hits certified sales of four million copies.
  • May 4 - Tom Petty on cover of Rolling Stone.
  • June 5 & 6 - To help with the bombing of the Federal Building, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers donate over $100,000 from their two sold out shows in Oklahoma City to the Children's Relief Fund.
  • August 10 - Wildflowers certified Triple Platinum.
  • September 7 - Tom Petty receives his 2nd little spaceman for "Best Male Video" at the 12th annual MTV Video Music Awards.
  • October 8 - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers AGAIN decide to donate all the proceeds from their New Orleans show, $175,000, to the National Veterans Foundation.
  • October 20 - The Playback box set is released including six CDs (or cassettes) with 92 songs; two of the CDs contained never-before-released material and one consisted of non-LP B-sides. Package included an 84-page booklet a poster and a laminated backstage pass from the band's 1989 tour.

1996
  • January 24 - Playback certified Gold.
  • February 25 - Tom Petty, Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench join Johnny Cash onstage at the House Of Blues in L.A.
  • February 28 - Tom Petty receives his 2nd Grammy for "You Don't Know How It Feels" in the "Best Male Rock Vocal Performance" category.
  • April 26 - Tom Petty receives the "George and Ira Gershwin Award for Lifetime Musical Acheivement". Tom unexpectedly performed an acoustic version of "Angel Dream" to a crowd of 4000 students at UCLA.
  • May 17 - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers perform at the AmFAR Benefit Concert in Beverly Hills, CA.
  • May 20 - Tom Petty receives, at the 13th annual ASCAP Pop Music Awards in L.A., the "Golden Note Award" for his achievements as a songwriter, artist and producer.
  • June 11 - Tom Petty introduced Carl Perkins at the "Hollywood Rockwalk" induction ceremony.
  • August 5 - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers make their debut appearance on the "Tonight Show with Jay Leno", performing "Walls".
  • August 6 - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers release "She's The One". This is the band's first soundtrack to a movie. The album spent 14 weeks on the Billboard 200.
  • August 16 - The movie "She's The One" (with my girlfriend, Jennifer Anniston) premieres in New York and Los Angeles.
  • August 24 - She's The One hits it's peak position of #15 on the Billboard 200.
  • September 28 - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers perform "Walls" and "Angel Dream" on Saturday Night Live.
  • September 30 - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers perform "Walls" on David Letterman.
  • September 30 - Greatest Hits certified sales of six million copies.
  • October - Carl Perkins releases "Go Cat Go" with the Heartbreakers playing on three songs.
  • December 6 - She's The One certified Gold.

1997
  • January - Tom Petty on Cover of BAM magazine.
  • January 10 - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers launch their unprecedented 20 show run at the Fillmore in San Francisco.
  • January 25 & 26 - Carl Perkins joins the band onstage at the Fillmore.
  • January 31 - Roger McGuinn joins the band onstage at the Fillmore.
  • February - Tom Petty on Cover of BAM magazine...again.
  • February 1 - Roger McGuinn joins the band onstage at the Fillmore...again.
  • February 6 & 7 - John Lee Hooker joins the band onstage at the Fillmore. The two shows are also broadcast over the Internet, making it the band's first Webcast.
  • February 7 - The mayor of San Francisco declared February 7, 1997 to be "Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Day" in San Francisco.
  • May 6 - Tom Petty introduces Buffalo Springfield at the 12th annual Rock 'N Roll Hall of Fame induction. Tom joined the band on stage to perform "For What It's Worth".
  • December 25 - Kevin Costner's movie, The Postman premieres across the US. Tom Petty makes cameo as the Mayor of Bridge City.

1999
  • March 7 - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers begin their 7 show run at the Fillmore in San Francisco.
  • March 13 - Sean pays $450 bucks for ONE ticket and then flies 3000 miles to puke at the Fillmore. Did get to meet most of the band and Lizzy though!
  • April 11, 12 & 15 - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers play three shows at Irving Plaza in NY.
  • April 13 - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers release Echo. Produced by Tom Petty, Mike Campbell and Rick Rubin. Spent 23 weeks on the Billboard 200.
  • April 19 & 20 - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers play two shows at Shepherd's Bush Empire in London.
  • April 23 - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers play the Docks Konzerte in Hamburg, Germany.
  • April 27 - Greatest Hits certified sales of nine million copies.
  • April 28 - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
  • May 1 - Echo hits it's peak position at #10 on the Billboard 200 chart.
