gonegator.com Tom Petty News - September 2004
September 16, 2004
HAPPY BIRTHDAY
to Heartbreaker and all around great guy (from all reports, interviews, etc.) Ron Blair! Ron was born September 16, 1948. 18 years and ONE DAY before the guy who runs this site. (somebody buy me that Martin HD40!!! Please?) Ron returned to the Heartbreakers as bass player in the summer of '02 after a 20 year vacation.

Super Seventies Classic Award!

gonegator.com has been awarded the Super Seventies Classic Award! This award is presented to those cool Seventies music and/or culture sites which feature superior editorial and design content.

Super Seventies Classic Award

You like me, you REALLY like me! - WOO HOO! Another text link. Don't laugh, do you have one? Seriously, thanks to Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers for carrying the torch and to the fans who trust the site and have read my crap for five years!

What's New @ gonegator.com - If you haven't noticed, I'm making some changes (ok a lot!) to the site. If you come get any weird error messages, let me know, but If it just looks weird, it will be fixed eventually! You will be seeing some of the info from the Super Seventies site that I've condensed and or embellished/plagiarized on the Bio pages. I'm almost done with the 70s. Trying to cram a decade of music history into a few pages is tough! The 80s are going to take a looooong time!

HEY! Cut it out!! - Ok, I've received a couple (thousand) e-mails about the message that comes up when you right-click on a picture and try to save it. Two weeks ago, I got one from Benmont Tench's sister. The Tench family are just great people, talented and smart! It was funny, she sent me a message saying something like "HEY! You cut it out! What the heck is that about?" So, I said...

Sorry about that, it's there to save me money!
I'm re-designing the site and I have several websites that just copy my links, steal my pics and put them on their websites. It costs me money (a lot) when people use my information that way.

The message could have been more rude! LOL!

So, with that last name, I have to ask... any relation to Benmont? Met him several times. One of the greatest people I've ever met."

So, she said...

Hi Sean,
Thanks for the reply. Now 'tis all clear.
Benmont's my brother. He really is a great guy.

We sent a few more notes back and forth, and plan to be married in the Spring (JOKING!), it was really cool. I told her that I had a picture of the Tench Building in Gainesville on the site. Which she liked by the way...

See Heartbreaker History

So, that's the reasoning behind that message. To tell you the truth, it's easy to get around. Many people know how and I'm in the middle of fixing the whole problem. But it's a pain in the ass. So, if you just want a picture for your computer or something, just email me and ask! Let me know the page and how many down on the page it is... I'll eventually email it to ya! If you want to use it on your site, send me some CASH!

To the 100 or so sites on my reports each week, linking directly to the pics on my server and costing me a lot of money in bandwidth charges,

HEY!! CUT IT OUT!!!

GoneGator is Rockin' - I sent this out to the E-mail list last night/this morning... by the way, if you're not on the mailing list, you're an idiot (joking... kinda), put you're e-mail address over there to the right and click "I Need To Know!" ANYWAY, I found this concert review of A.J. Cannon (who?!?!?!) in a Portland weekly paper. The guy says "I pass the Paris Theatre, then stop. Something inside is rocking. I mean really rocking. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers rocking." Thought that was perfect. You all know what he means, or you sure as hell wouldn't be here!

"The Greatest Album Covers That Never Were."

Butler's Petty
Craig Butler's Tom Petty

With full support from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (who by the way asked gonegator.com the Todd Rundgren question a few weeks ago), graphic designer Craig Butler and music archivist Michael Ochs launched a quirky but mind-blowing project: "The Greatest Album Covers That Never Were."
They convinced 100 long-established designers to create hypothetical album covers for their favorite recording artists. The show originally debuted at the Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, and now a portion of it runs in the Natalie and James Thompson Gallery at San Jose State University.

blah ... blah ... blah...

What's cool is that "graphic designer" Craig Butler, who originally designed Frank Zappa's 200 Motels album cover (Some Beach Boys and Byrds too!), designed a Tom Petty one just for the show.

gonegator.com wasn't satisfied with this article. With a story like that and not be located anywhere near the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame OR San Jose, we had to see the picture! With our professional (don't try this at home) staff, we were able to find this one!

Tom Petty's Buried Treasures

Premieres this Fall. Each month from his Los Angeles home, Rock-and-Roll Hall-of-Famer Tom Petty takes his place as XM Radio's raconteur and on-air host par excellence. The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter, Heartbreakers ringleader, Traveling Wilbury, and rock legend will pull together a set of little known musical delights and classic tracks alike - many vintage, each a treasure. It is an hour of radio magic woven together with Petty's articulate and passionate take on his first love, the music.

More coming soon!

blah ... blah ... blah...
Merritt lacks the grit of, say, Lucinda Williams, but who doesn't? Merritt is a talented songwriter, and while there are some strong ballads, most of the better tunes benefit from the combination of her smooth voice over the guitar playing of one of the best in the business, Mike Campbell of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

blah ... blah ... blah... blah ... Maria McKee lends backup harmony to a couple of songs, and another Heartbreaker, keyboardist Benmont Tench, who played prominently on "Bramble Rose," appears on the reflective "Laid a Highway." ...
