Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Honored

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers received the Legend Award at the 2003 Radio Music Awards.

Stevie Nicks presented the award to the group in front of thousands of cheering fans Monday at the Aladdin hotel-casino on the Las Vegas Strip.

"He not only started out as my greatest musical influence, but today he's still my greatest musical influence," Nicks said.

The group performed two songs, "I'm Crying" and "Runnin' Down a Dream." Petty thanked radio stations for taking a chance on an "unknown band."

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers In Studio

Rumor (ok, a little better than rumor) has it that Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers are in the studio writing new songs. This is the VERY beginning of the process. No working titles, not even a target release date.

Not that my opinion means anything, but I heard they may start recording the new ones at the end of this year. So maybe a new album out in the Spring!?!?!

Art for AIDS III: The Concert for Stephen
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers Live! In Concert

Celebrity guests Tom Petty, Sharon Stone, Cher, Barbara Streisand, Carrie Fisher, Penny Marshall, Jackson Browne, Bob Dylan, Barry Manilow, Priscilla Presley, Merv Griffin, and artist Billy Al Bengston have accepted invitations to attend Art for AIDS III. Set for Saturday, February 7, 2004, the event has fast become the premiere gala in Orange County. This year's Art for AIDS will allow guests to choose from three party options, all of which will be crowned by a live concert by rock legend Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. The concert will be dedicated to the memory of Stephen Cy Costick, brother of Petty's wife Dana, who died of the disease in 1993. Art for AIDS III: The Concert for Stephen, will take place at the spectacular St. Regis Monarch Beach Resort & Spa.

In addition to this year’s parties and concert, an auction of artworks and donated celebrity items will be held. Last year's auction items included a Tom Petty -autographed Fender guitar, a pair of Elizabeth's Taylor's shoes, and a fabulous Clinique Ergonique spa package.

Returning event chairs—LAM trustee Jack Kenefick, Founding Director of the American Foundation for AIDS Research, Arnold Klein M.D., and Founding President of ASF Al Roberts—in a joint statement, thanked Tom Petty and all of the celebrity guests, promising yet another memorable evening. "ART for AIDS III, thanks to the kindness of Tom Petty and our celebrity guests, will be an amazing evening, one not to be missed."

Additionally, each attendee will receive a beautiful work created especially for this event by celebrity artist Billy Al Bengston. Afterwards, guests will be escorted to the Pacific Ballroom for the remainder of the evening’s festivities. Seats are $2,500 per person.

The Ballroom Dinner Party Guests will dine in the St. Regis Monarch Ballroom beginning with cocktails and followed by a buffet dinner provided by six of Orange County’s finest restaurants. Before and after dinner guests can bid on silent auction items in the Pacific Ballroom Rotunda. Table prices range from $1,500 – $10,000 and include a wide variety of benefits. A limited number of single dinner seats are also available at $375 per person.

The Cocktail Party Starting at 8:00 p.m., guests can enjoy cocktails and mingle with friends in the St. Regis Pacific Ballroom Rotunda before the concert. The silent auction will also be open for bidding. The cocktail party and seats at the concert cost $235 per person.

Concert for George UK Premiere - GoneGator.Com was able to send several UK fans to the UK Premiere. I received the following email from Katherine this morning. I'm glad they had such a good time!

Sean,
I had a great time. I got there at 7.20 p.m. There were barriers up and fans screaming, just like at a "proper" premiere, it was kind of freaky, and went and waited in the foyer where I happened to be standing next to Nick Rees (on your list) + his girlfriend (you and Tom brought us together as TP fans, ha ha). We managed to stay put in the foyer (they were trying to move everyone into the auditorium, but we hung on in there. So we saw most of the "stars" arrive. Dhani Harrison stood in front of me but I couldn't bring myself to say anything to him out of respect and because I didn't want to be moved on. He was very fresh-faced and innocent looking, quite small, and of course looks exactly like his father. Ringo Starr and his wife came in, Eric Clapton - and then Paul McCartney and his wife. Nick and his girl got Paul's autograph, just about the only one Paul signed. Paul said hullo to me and asked how I was and said it was nice to see me! (Wow!). We went into the auditorium then and sat in the front row. Olivia Harrison came onstage and made a little introductory speech, thanking all those who contributed to the concert and film.

The film was really great. The sound is great. Taxman and Handle with Care with TP & The HBs were on it. I was wanting to get up and dance again, like I did at the time; they lowered the sound in Handle With Care for bits of an interview with Tom talking about how they composed the song in the garage, throwing lines at each other. It was kind of a shock seeing Tom with all his long blonde hair and unshaven face and beard, looking like he could have auditioned for a Harry Potter film, he looked like a wizard, like Merlin! I got a thrill at hearing the band as I did at the time. It brings home to us over here what we are missing, I can tell you that! I was bug-eyed. You don't know how lucky you Americans are! I'm looking forward to seeing the complete dvd of the concert, rather than a documentary sort of version which is what this film is.

After the film the audience applauded the stars who were sitting half way back in the auditorium. Well, thanks very much for the tickets, I am so grateful - it was a big thrill to go there. It was a special occasion. As far as Tom in concerned, it is so difficult in this country where the band hardly ever comes. I love reading up what is going on on your website but of course everything, even TV appearances, is always over there, and I don't have any kind of advanced technology, like satellite tv or internet at home, so I can never download any of the audio or video bits. So I feel really pretty much left out of things. I guess if I knew TP fans in the US I'd have come over to see him on tour, but it's not that easy. I am getting desperate! SO - what I wanted to say is, that even though Tom wasn't there in person, it was still something for us, and I am grateful for it. Also it was nice to meet Nick Rees (unfortunately he is in Liverpool, but we have exchanged email addresses). So I feel I am not quite alone in the UK! Thanks again, Katherine.

Tonight Show Tonight - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers will be on the Tonight Show again tonight. This will be the 3rd time the band has appeared on the show this year.

The band will be performing The Kinks' I gotta Move. Here are the lyrics:

I don't wanna get left behind
Gonna love my baby all the time
If I don't wanna get left alone
I gotta move on down my baby's home
And if my baby isn't there
I'm gonna fill my gap and comb my hair
Gotta move, gotta move
Gotta move, gotta move

All my life I've had to move
Always failed to stay in school
As I move down this very long road
Sometimes I wished I'd stayed at home
Where I'm going no one knows
Only know I gotta go
You gotta move, gotta move
Gotta move, gotta move

I don't wanna get left behind
Gonna love my baby all the time
If I don't wanna get left alone
I gotta move on down my baby's home
And if baby isn't there
I'm gonna brush my boots and comb my hair
I gotta move, gotta move
I gotta move, gotta move
