Petty Gets Reader's Choice For Rock Hall - No surprise here! - The waiting may be the hardest part, but Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers might not have to wait much longer to get into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

They were voted the most deserving nominees for induction in The Plain Dealer's second annual reader's choice rock hall poll.

"We're very grateful to all the people who voted, and we're humbled by the whole experience," Petty said in a statement issued through his publicist. "We're very flattered. . . . We love Cleveland."

Perennial heavy-metal contenders Black Sabbath, Southern-rock mainstays Lynyrd Skynyrd, punk's beloved Ramones, hard-rock heroes AC/DC, new-wave wonders Talking Heads and soul man Isaac Hayes were the other top vote-getters, in order of popularity. Readers and visitors to the Cleveland Live Web site submitted more than 340 ballots.

Petty, 51, is in the middle of recording a new album with the Heartbreakers. "It's probably the best thing I've ever done," the singer-guitarist said. "Things are going really great. It's mind-boggling."

It's only a matter of time before he and his band make it back to Northeast Ohio. "We're planning to tour erratically - and erotically - for the rest of our lives," he said.

Petty and the Heartbreakers released their self-titled debut album in 1976.

They remain among today's most popular rock acts, with more than a dozen Top 40 hits to their credit, including "Don't Do Me Like That," "Refugee" and "Don't Come Around Here No More."

Nominated along with Petty on the official rock hall ballot are longtime sidekicks Mike Campbell (guitar), Benmont Tench (keyboards) and Howie Epstein (bass), as well as ex-band members Ron Blair (bass) and Stan Lynch (drums).

Tom Petty: Hero of a Generation! - Or two!!! From The LA Times - Ok, this is kinda cool! The Army, Air Force and Marine Corps have changed their television advertising since Sept. 11 to subtly pick up on President Bush's call to arms for the fight against terrorism.

...The Army replaced its "Army of one" ad with one called "generations" that uses an instrumental version of singer Tom Petty's "I Won't Back Down" and has the slogan, "Every generation has its heroes: This one is no different."

Studio Update - We all know Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers have been in the studio recording their next album (Because everybody read it HERE in September News, right?).

Recently Mike Campbell's "Guitar Tech Extraordinaire", Steve Winstead (aka Chinner) had posted on the official BBS that the band was in the studio this week. Chinner said "the new stuff is really cool". He went on to say that one song reminded him of Abbey Road era Beatles. AND one song was "VERY different".

Scheduled Chat - Tonight 10PM EST

It's Aliiiiiive! - For those who haven't been here in a while, the GoneGator.Com message board has taken on a life of it's own. I know some people are hesitant to post on other message boards because of some other posters. I hope you don't get that feeling here.

MJ Song Finished - Michael Jackson has finished recording "What More Can I Give," his new star-studded single that he hopes will raise more than $50 million for families of victims of the September 11th terrorist attacks.

Since the tragedy Jackson has been crisscrossing the country to collaborate with Tom Petty, Ricky Martin, Santana, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Destiny's Child's Beyonce Knowles, the Backstreet Boys, Nick Carter, Aaron Carter, Mya, Luis Miguel, Ziggy Marley, Gloria Estefan, Boyz II Men's Shawn Stockman, Skakira and numerous others.

"I have no other agenda other than to just see some of these families smile again," said Jackson, who was in New York City at the time of the attacks. "A song is a mantra, something you repeat over and over. And we need peace, we need giving, we need love, we need unity. I want the whole world to sing this song." Jackson also helped organize the USA for Africa single, "We Are the World," sixteen years ago. The song has raised more than $65 million to help fight starvation in Africa.

Sun Records Tribute - Thanks to PVTPEPPER for letting me know the release date has been pushed back again. Originally scheduled to be released October 2. It was first pushed back to the 16th, now it is scheduled for an October 30th release.

Tom Petty will be performing "Blue Moon of Kentucky" on Good Rockin' Tonight (The Sun Records Tribute). The 16-track compilation, features new versions of classic Sun cuts. Elton John covers Jerry Lee Lewis' "Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On," Live does Johnny Cash's footsteps on "I Walk the Line" and McCartney performs Elvis' first single, "That's All Right."

A film, also called Good Rockin' Tonight, will air on PBS in November. The movie will include footage of the making of the album.
