I had an opportunity to get a pair of complimentary
tickets, and I invited my daughter to come along
with her friend. It was their first trip to the Tweeter
Center. The guest seats were in the 24th row, Section 2 -
so with the slope, the “kids” had great seats.
I admit that I loved picking up their tickets at
the Will Call window - saying, “I’m a guest of the band”!
We’d arrived in time to catch up with some fans in the
lot, and made plans to meet up under the flagpoles
after the show. My seat in Sect. 1, Row “L” - I
found out when I got in, was actually 4th row, but with
a few folding chairs in the front. I almost hit
the ceiling!! I was jumping up & down showing
my daughter, and KK where I’d be standing
tonight! I could see their jaws drop! I was so
psyched, but I didn’t stay to see Setzer, as I
waited with KK by the gate to the garden area/backstage.
She’d handed a note off to a very nice guy in
Security, he passed it along to someone trustworthy,
and she waited to see if there was any chance Benmont
would make an appearance. He didn’t. We made a new
sign for her. She was thrilled about the night before, handed me her disposable camera in hopes of getting some pictures for her. (I hope there’s anything good in there - I tried, but I was on Ron’s side.) Bonnie brought the banner she’d made, and I could see a reporter with her and Meg in front of the stage - (I’ll find out which paper). Diane (TPRox) and her b/f were 2 rows in front of me, and Debbie (Honeybees) had the GREAT FORTUNE of winning front row tickets from a radio station! I could see her dancing at the edge of the stage during the show, right smack in front of Tom!! I was alone in my row, very happy that in front of me 2 business men in their dress shirts - I thought, “hmmm....., they look like they’ll be sittin’ down!” (I was RIGHT!!) the girls next to my right made fast friends, and no one was in the 4 seats to my left until MJLD - so, when Tom was singing I Won’t Back Down, came over to the end of my aisle - there I was, easily ran to the edge of the stage - right at his precious feet, with my camera! First I stared up at him, not believing how close I was, and he looked me in the eyes, (lol, it was a cosmic moment... ) and I had to get him with my camera. Several times he wandered our way, and Security was so rapt in the show, they never noticed when I’d stand on my seat for pictures! (Film not back yet - I am having an anxiety attack until I see these!)
I loved the new songs again, and I can still hear them! I’m glad I got the chance to do both shows, and that it was the 2nd night that I was closer. (After NH show, I knew that this one would have a more involved and familiar crowd.) This audience was on it’s feet from beginning to end (except for the guys right in front of me) and I danced and sang, and still have no voice.
The setlist was the same order, but with one addition - “Dirty Water”. Again this year, they thrilled us! I can’t even describe the energy - it was electric and uproarious!! I waited to hear Too Much Ain’t Enough again. This time I had my yellow laser stick and was waving it wildly above my head, making these light patterns that were as wild as this song! I was going nuts, and I noticed they were watching me. First Tom, and then Mike had this huge smile , and I waved to him like we were old friends, Hahahahaahaha - he really was smilin’ then!! When I met up with my kid later, she said, “That was YOU????? Tom was looking right at you! It was all you could see in that section! (The girls next to me were goin’ wild! “You got their attention! Keep going!! OMG - He‘s looking over here!” They really loved me now!) I swear, this song possessed me!! It made dancing circles of yellow light - they HAD to be noticed, adn each time their pauses came I paused the yellow lightstick. Man, I want to go to every show now for the rest of the summer - just for this song!
Every time Tom sings G-L-O-R-I-A, it is different. This was nearly perfection - my daughter later said, Gloria was “just plain funny!” I used the end of the roll of film at the end of the show, and Steve stepped down and brought his drumsticks to a girl at the edge of the stage on this side. She seem stunned!
For phone calls: I had tried both days to get MadHatter - and we never connected! (I picked up a green Tshirt for him, and was going to let him hear Lost Children, but it hadn’t connected yet that day, so when that song was about to start, I called Barb. I couldn’t hear her, nor any screaming. When the song finished, I got a little voice that said, “My Mom’s not home right now.” I laughed hysterically telling Aaron that he’s to tell his Mom he heard Lost Children, and he loves it!!! Barb tells me she came in 2 minutes later, and he said, “Somebody called, but all we could hear was music!” It was so cute that he’d stayed on the phone ‘til I could hear him! I called lea during Refugee, and could barely hear her for a minute after. The girls next to me loved that I was calling Holland and California! (Me, too!)
As they departed the stage, Tom looked right at me and waved goodnight. No wonder I can’t stop smiling.
A few of us met after the show to say our goodbyes at the flagpoles and we had a stranger take our group picture. It was funny that we spontaneously said, “Petty”! instead of “Cheese”! We wandered to our cars, poor Meg is still on one crutch since her accident, and eventually found our way out of the corral.
